Shipley’s Choice Students Sell Snowmen at Clements

These snowmen, handmade by students at Shipley's Choice, can be purchased for $10 at Clement Hardware in Severna Park. Proceeds benefit the students annual field day costs.

Looking to add a snowman to your holiday decorations? Consider purchasing one made by a Shipley’s Choice student at Clement Hardware.

A special education class at Shipley’s, taught by Kim Chesek, has created decorative snowmen and are selling them for $10 at Clement Hardware to help raise money for their annual field day at Marley Elementary.

“Each year the students participate in the Marley Invitational, which is like a field day for special education,” Chesek said. “But the cost for a bus to transport the kids was around $400, which was too much. So I needed a fundraiser to off-set the cost.”

Since there are only 12 kids in the class, Chesek couldn’t ask each child to contribute, so she decided to organize a fundraiser using the kids creative talents.

The students made decorative snowmen out of brick pavers and are selling them for $10 each. When Chesek asked local hardware stores for donations it was Gordon Clement who came to her rescue.

“I wrote a letter to Mr. Clement and another hardware store asking for paint and supplies and let me tell you what he did,” Chesek said. “Not only did he call me back right away and offer to donate supplies. When I told him I was in need of more pavers he offered to look for them on Craigslist for me.”

Clement found the pavers for Chesek and her class and offered her his truck to go pick them up,

“She told me she needed more pavers and I remember seeing them on Craigslist all the time—sometimes for free,” Clement said. “She wasn’t really familiar with Craigslist so I offered to help.”

Clement then offered to sell the snowmen in his store.

“We really appreciate Mr. Clement,” Chesek said. “They don’t come much nicer than him. The other hardware place didn’t even get back to me.”

The snowmen, which come in all varieties including Ravens themed, can be purchased at Clement Hardware at 500 Ritchie Highway. Proceeds will go towards funding a bus and T-shirts for the students’ field day.

“Customers love them so far; they are really cute,” Clement said. “I just think more people need to know they are here.”

Local Soldier Battles Life After the Army

Severna Park resident Brett Miller, 31, served in the Army for five years, but that didn't help him when it came to landing a job.

Severna Park High School graduate Brett Miller seems like the perfect Army cliché.

Miller, now 31, failed out of the University of Maryland after two years and found himself working a dead-end job at Wendy’s. After coming to the realization that taking orders at the Wendy’s drive-through wasn’t a career, Miller decided to join the army.

“Me and my friend got the job at Wendy’s as an in-between school thing,” Miller said. “He left for school and I was just working at Wendy’s and playing video games. Joining the military wasn’t like, ‘oh I want money for school' or ‘oh, I want to fight for my country.’ It was like I need to do something. I had no idea what to do, so that’s what I did.”

Miller signed up to join the U.S. Army where he became a combat medic. After boot camp he was stationed at Fort Wainwright, AK from 2003-2005 and then deployed to Iraq in 2005 for 16 months. Miller said his unit served the longest consecutive tour in Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Miller served five years in the army and afterwards he went to Anne Arundel Community College for three semesters and then back to the University of Maryland where he graduated with a finance degree in May 2011. Then Miller entered a whole different battle—the search for a job.

“When I first got out of school, I applied for like a billion jobs,” Miller said. “I just went online and threw applications everywhere. And in all that time and applications I got two callbacks—two in six months of applying.”

Miller took the only job he was offered, one at New York Life. It was a sales job that paid solely on commission and not one he liked.

“I sucked at it,” he said. “It was pure commissions sales, selling life insurance and I just didn’t like it.”

Miller began applying for more and more jobs and quickly found out that while his time spent in the Army may have put him on the right track—the five years he lost while doing so hindered his résumé.

“The thing is people don’t care about military experience,” he said. “I thought I would get a job no problem—a Maryland finance degree is pretty good.”

Miller added, “The biggest thing I took away from the military is they say the military puts you ahead in life and blah, blah. The military may guide you on the proper steps but you still lose five years. I am 31 and just graduated from college compared to a 22-year-old graduate with workplace experience—employers care more about that.”

More than a year after he graduated from Maryland, Miller was living in Severna Park, working part-time at Sport Fit, and still searching for a job.

Last Tuesday, he found a job as a retail management trainee at Ryder, a truck rental company. A friend helped him get the job.

“I loved my time in the military. It’s great if you are like me and just amiss wandering, but be prepared to lose five years,” Miller said. “I don’t get those five years back to work in finance, and I have to be the 31-year-old college graduate and people look at you weird.”

10 Least Liked Holiday Songs: What's Yours?

From singing dogs to a philandering Santa Claus, these recordings came in last place in a recent survey.

Odds are there's at least one Christmas recording filling the airwaves each December that you absolutely, positively cannot stand.

Maybe it's something about the vocalist. Maybe the song brings up less than cheerful memories. Maybe the carol itself is just plain awful.

Whatever the reason, you're not alone. Edison Research, a company specializing in marketing and polling, has published a list of least liked holiday songs for 2012.

To compile its rankings, the company polled a group of 200 women ages 30-49 "who said they liked or loved hearing Christmas music on the radio." (The sample may be somewhat unrepresentative of the broader population, but we're willing to bet a few of these recordings would show up on a great many "least favorite" lists.)

Coming in a regrettable first place was "Jingle Bells" by The Singing Dogs, a 1955 standard that many would rather relegate to the dustbin of musical history. Hot on its heels: "The Man With All The Toys" by The Beach Boys and "All I Want For Christmas Is My Two Front Teeth” by Spike Jones.

On the flipside, the company found the late Andy Williams’ "It’s The Most Wonderful Time of the Year" to be the crowd favorite. "You’re A Mean One, Mr. Grinch" also fared well.

Find the full list of least-liked holiday recordings—along with links to YouTube versions—below:

  1.  "Jingle Bells" sung (barked) by The Singing Dogs
  2. "The Man With All The Toys" sung by The Beach Boys

Girls Basketball: Falcons Focusing on Defense, Striving for Wins

Here's a rundown of the Severna Park High athletic schedule for this week.

The Severna Park High School girls basketball team tipped off its season on Thursday night with a matchup against St. Mary’s High School.

After finishing the season last year with a 9-15 record, this year’s squad, led by first-year varsity coach Lisa Magness, is focusing on defense and hoping that leads to victories.

“We are going with a defensive minded game plan this year,” Magness said. “We are going to change it up and run as many defenses as we can so other teams are caught off guard by not knowing what we are going to run.”

Magness also said this year’s team is much quicker than years past, which she plans to utilize with an aggressive press. She said they are planning to use that as much as possible.

The team’s recent addition of speed is something Magness attributes to the work the girls have put in during the offseason as well as in practice.

“We did a lot of offseason conditioning and lifting,” she said. “We played in a summer league and we encouraged the girls to play AAU ball and they listened to us.”

The time spent working together in the offseason has united the team and helped their ability to play as a unit on the court.

“We are definitely a team of unity this year,” said senior and captain Kiara Johnson. “We’re more connected on the court and in practice together, which helps us to be more to be in sync.”

Just a week into the season, the Falcons will already have one of their first tests on Saturday as they take on Broadneck. The rivalry between the two schools is something Magness is very familiar with.

“Being a Severna Park alum, I know the Broadneck feeling and it is a big game for me as well,” Magness said. “However, we need to stay focused on the fact that it is just another game and keep our emotions in check.”

Magness led a successful JV program at Severna Park High School for four years and she is hoping to continue with that success on the varsity level.

Entering the season, Meade and South River are the heavy favorites to finish in the top spots in the county, but Magness isn’t shying away from a little intercounty competition.

“I am expecting us to give great games to South River, Broadneck and Arundel,” she said. “South River and Meade are usually projected to go one and two, but I feel with my 12 girls that we have on varsity we can make a complete run at the championship with hard work and dedication.”

Logan Brady, a senior at Severna Park High School, will play lacrosse at Campbell University next year.

Logan Brady, a senior at Severna Park High School, has committed to play lacrosse at Campbell University in Buies Creek, NC.

Patch caught up with Brady, 17, to ask her a few questions about her recent commitment.

Severna Park Patch: What are you most looking forward to in college?
Logan Brady: I am most looking forward to playing with a new set of girls and being in a completely different environment.

Severna Park Patch: How has your high school athletic career (in school or outside of school) prepared you for the Division I experience?
Brady: My high school coach, Carin Peterson, has prepared me for my Division 1 experience. She makes our high school practices comparable to what it would be like in Division I.

Severna Park Patch: What made you decide to choose Campbell University?
Brady: I chose Campbell University because I wanted to go to a small school down south. Everyone there was very welcoming and I felt like I fit in very easily. I could see it definitely being my new home.

Severna Park Patch: What do you like to do besides lacrosse?
Brady: Besides playing lacrosse I like to hangout with friends, go to the beach and spend time with my family.

Severna Park Patch: Who would you say has had the most influence on you and your athletic career and why?
Brady: I would say my Mom, Brenda Brady, has had the most influence on my athletic career. She has always believed in me with everything I have ever done, pushed me to my limits and helped me up when I was down. She has always been right by my side through my whole experience in all my sports.

Severna Park Patch: What advice would you give to a younger athlete looking to pursue a college athletic career?
Brady: If I had to give advice to a younger athlete I would tell them to never give up, and to push their limits. If they work hard and set goals they can reach them.

Chesapeake Harmony Chorus Offers Friendship, Singing

The Chesapeake Harmony Chorus, a four-part a capella singing group, performs at a variety of events around town and is always looking for new members.

By Megan Kowalski

If you were to walk into the Historic Baldwin Hall in Millersville on any given Wednesday night, you might wonder where the singing was coming from. If you followed your curiosity, it would lead you right to the Chesapeake Harmony Chorus.

A group of about 20 women comprises the Chesapeake Harmony Chorus, a four-part a capella singing group based in the greater Annapolis area. In addition to rehearsing once a week, the group performs at a variety of events and functions—including fairs, festivals, luncheons, assisted living homes and Bowie Baysox games. In the process of learning about music, they also get to learn about themselves, according to public relations coordinator Debbie Toy.

“It’s a wonderful hobby for women,” she said. “You learn leadership, you learn self-esteem, self-confidence, and just so many things that women don’t know they don’t have.”

The Chesapeake Harmony Chorus is currently in the process of wrapping up its holiday singing celebration events, which began on Nov. 7. The group encourages women to come to their weekly rehearsals and join them, free of obligation, in singing carols at various holiday events, including the Grand Illumination in downtown Annapolis.

Wednesday, Dec. 12 is the last time the chorus will be rehearsing before the holidays.

No musical experience is necessary to be a member of the Chesapeake Harmony Chorus, nor is a stellar singing voice.

“You don’t have to be a professional to be in this group,” chorus team coordinator Carol Gass said. “None of us has a beautiful voice, but it’s learning how to blend and how to fit into this group vocally.”

Learning the ins and outs of singing a capella in the Chesapeake Harmony Chorus is made as effortless as possible thanks to the director of the group, Tancey Bosna, who has extensive musical background. She teaches the women singing techniques and provides individual and group voice lessons, free of charge.

While there may be a wide range of ages and personalities in the Chesapeake Harmony Chorus, the camaraderie among the group is something that is relished by all.

“We really enjoy each other,” Severna Park resident and membership coordinator Sally Burton said. “It’s like a sisterhood … we look out for each other, we like to have fun, yet we want to perform really well and impress our other sister choruses.”

Arnold resident and Chesapeake Harmony Chorus charter member Leone Craven agrees, saying that the biggest benefit to being a part of the group is “the friendship - without a doubt.”

“Everybody gets together, they do things for each other, and you really look forward to coming,” she said.

Those interested in the Chesapeake Harmony Chorus are encouraged to attend a rehearsal, which occur every Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at the Historic Baldwin Hall in Millersville. More information can be found at www.chesapeakeharmony.org.

As Debbie Toy said, “If you can walk and chew gum, you can probably carry a tune and we’d love to have you come sing with us.”
