UPDATE (10:35 a.m. Tuesday) — A 21-year-old man, James Arthur Zito, allegedly stabbed his mother and then fled their home on Monday night in the Shipley's Choice community in Millersville, according to a press release. Police responded to a family violence call at about 7:30 p.m. in the 700 block of Stacy Oak Way where a 54-year-old woman was suffering from multiple stab wounds. Police issued a community alert at about 11:30 p.m. Monday night warning the community and surrounding area to lock their doors and to turn on exterior lights, according to the release.
Police are seeking help from the public in locating Zito, a white male, about 5 feet 9 inches tall and weighing 170 pounds with long dark hair with a mustache, according to police.
He was last seen wearing red shirt and dark sweats. Police are seeking charges for first-degree assault and assault with a deadly weapon. The suspect is possibly armed with a knife and anyone with information is urged to immediately call 911.
A preliminary investigation indicates that the man suddenly became violent for unknown reasons and restrained two family members inside of the home before later stabbing his mother multiple times in the upper body, according to information released by police on Tuesday morning.
The man initially fled on foot toward the rear of the home and then was observed fleeing toward Red Birch Road in the Shipley's Choice community, police said. The 54-year-old woman was transported to an area hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.
According to police, numerous patrol officers have conducted an extensive search of the area with assistance from K-9, aviation and bloodhounds and continue to search for the man, according to the press release.
